About Rocio

Most of us experienced some form of trauma—but do we truly understand how it rewires our brain and body?

More importantly, do we know how to reshape them?

Understanding trauma is understanding transformation.

I'm Rocío Suárez Ordoñez — Clinical Psychologist, international consultant, and speaker. I have specialized in trauma, mental health, and substance use disorders.

For over 14 years, I have worked alongside international organizations, individuals, and institutions to reframe the role of trauma in shaping individuals, systems, and societies.

At the core of my work is a simple but profound truth: trauma is not merely an event; it is a form of deep learning that rewires the brain, body, and emotional responses at their most fundamental levels.

Grounded in neuroscience and psychology, my approach combines rigorous scientific insight with actionable strategies for healing and resilience. I believe that true, sustainable change — whether at the individual, organizational, or systemic level — begins with deep trauma understanding.

Today, I collaborate with forward-thinking individuals and organizations seeking to move beyond surface-level interventions and embrace trauma-care transformation as a catalyst for lasting impact.

What Do You Think Trauma Is?

By Rocio Suarez Ordoñez

Let me tell you what trauma is not.

It’s not “woo-woo.”

It’s not just something from the past.

And it’s definitely not just mental.

These misconceptions are not only wrong—they’re harmful. They keep millions of people misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and stuck. Maybe even you.

Trauma is deeply physical.

It changes how your brain functions.

It hijacks your nervous system.

It can silently dictate your emotions, choices, and relationships—without you even realizing it.

Whether you make safe or self-destructive decisions, whether you can feel joy or only numbness... trauma is often behind it.

But trauma is not about what happened to you.

It’s about what your brain and body had to do to survive it.

When the nervous system can’t fully process a traumatic experience, it gets stuck in survival mode—fight, flight, freeze, or collapse. Over time, this becomes your new normal.

You might stop feeling.

You might stop caring.

You might just keep going—but never feel fully alive.

Why? Because your brain rewired itself.

Trauma is a deep, negative learning experience that literally reshapes your neural pathways. It teaches your body to expect danger—even when it’s not there anymore.

Trauma is not written in stone.

Thanks to one of the greatest discoveries of this century—neuroplasticity—we now know that the brain can change.

Yes, you can heal.

Yes, you can rewire.

Yes, you can learn—again—how to feel, connect, decide, and experience the world with clarity and calm.

But healing isn’t passive.

It’s an active process.

And it starts by understanding what trauma really is.
